Dodgers prospect from Taiwan uses movies, DVDs to learn English

Chin-Lung Hu is a shortstop in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. Signed out of Taiwan in 2003, the 22-year-old has moved steadily up the Dodgers’ ladder. One of the best defensive shortstops in all of Minor League baseball, Hu carried a .306 career batting average into the 2006 season after finishing second in the Florida State League with a .313 mark. No stranger to international competition, he hit .343 in the World Cup following the 2005 season and .417 in three World Baseball Classic contests this past spring. A participant in the 2006 Futures Game, Hu hit .254 with Double-A Jacksonville with 11 steals. He’s in Arizona playing for the Mesa Solar Sox and is chronicling his experiences in the AFL for MiLB.com.

Hello, everyone. My name is Chin-Lung Hu and I’m writing from Mesa, Ariz. I’m so happy to be here. It’s a pretty nice area. There are a lot of good players and I like it here.

My first game was on Monday and I was a little bit nervous. There are so many different guys on my team, so it was a little weird. I went 0-for-3 in that game, but I got my first hit in Tuesday’s game.

星期一是我在這兒的第一場比賽, 我有一點緊張, 在球隊中有很多不同的人, 感覺上有點怪, 當天我沒有安打的表現, 但是我在星期二的比賽擊出第一支安打.

While I’m here, I’m going to work on my hitting more than anything. I need more skill there. I want to be able to hit curveballs better. It was tough in Double-A. The pitchers are pretty good with good change-ups and good sliders.

當我在這兒時, 我要在我的打擊上多努力, 我需要學習更多的技巧, 我需要有能力把曲球打好, 在 AA 是很艱苦的, 投手們都很棒, 他們有很好的變速球和滑球.

I appreciate people who notice my defense. Our manager in Jacksonville, John Shoemaker, he helped me a lot this year. He used to be the infield coordinator and he’s a really good infielder. He taught me a lot.

After games or on a day off, I like going to movies with my teammates. Sometimes we’ll go to the mall or we’d just chill. When I was in Florida, we’d go fishing. That was really fun. Movies help me learn English. I get a lot of DVDs, but I still need the subtitles to understand everything.

在比賽之後或是休息日, 我喜歡和隊友一起去看電影, 有時候我們會去逛 mall, 或是就在那兒閒著(按:應該是這樣翻吧!:p) 當我在 Florida 時, 我們會去釣魚, 那很有意思(按:好像來美國的人都只能釣魚當興趣 XD), 電影能幫助我學習英文, 我有很多的 DVDs (按:我也有, 來交換 XD), 不過, 我還是需要開字幕才能了解完整的意思.

My teammates say my English is not too bad. Sometimes I try to teach them Chinese.

我的隊友說我的英文不差, 有時候我也會嘗試教他們中文.

After the fall league, I’ll go back to Taiwan for a while. I hope to make the Dodgers’ 40-man roster next year and go to Major League Spring Training, so I’m hoping the fall league helps get me ready for that.

在秋季聯盟結束之後, 我會回到台灣一陣子, 我希望明年能進入躲人隊40人名單, 和受邀參加大聯盟春訓, 所以, 我希望秋季聯盟能幫助我準備好一切.
